Arnold, Murphys, Angels Camp and Copperopolis are the four best-known towns of the Calaveras County foothills. Arnold is the high, forested cabin town; Murphys is walkable wine country; Angels Camp is the county's only incorporated city and shortest-commute value play; Copperopolis is the low, warm lake-and-golf town. All four are in Calaveras County and share Bret Harte Union High School.

Arnold sits highest, at about 3,999 feet on the Highway 4 corridor, with real winter snow and quick access to Bear Valley skiing and Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Arnold is the group's genuine second-home and cabin market — and the one where wildfire insurance matters most.
Murphys packs more than two dozen tasting rooms into a four-block Main Street at 2,171 feet, with an 1856 hotel and a creekside park. Murphys draws Bay Area and Sacramento buyers who want to trade a commute for a porch without giving up somewhere to walk to.
Angels Camp is the only incorporated city in Calaveras County, the lowest-priced of these town cores, and the closest to the Central Valley — about an hour to Stockton. Angels Camp is also home to Bret Harte High School and the Jumping Frog Jubilee.
Copperopolis is the warmest and lowest, at 997 feet on Lake Tulloch — one of the few California reservoirs allowing private shoreline homes — anchored by the Copper Valley and Saddle Creek golf communities.
Copperopolis has the shortest Central Valley commute of the four, at about 49 minutes to Stockton, followed by Angels Camp at roughly one hour. Arnold and Murphys sit higher on Highway 4 and are farther out.

Murphys is the wine town of Calaveras County, with more than two dozen tasting rooms along a walkable four-block Main Street. For Amador County vineyard estates, look one county north to Sutter Creek and the Shenandoah Valley.
All four — Arnold, Murphys, Angels Camp and Copperopolis — are in Calaveras County and feed Bret Harte Union High School. Elementary districts differ: Vallecito Union serves Arnold and Murphys, while Mark Twain Union serves Angels Camp and Copperopolis.
