What is Sutter Creek, California known for?
Sutter Creek homes for sale sit in the “Jewel of the Motherlode,” an Amador County Gold Rush town at about 1,188 feet — a preserved historic Main Street of antique shops at the front door of Shenandoah Valley wine country.
A creek, a stamp mill, a six-block Main Street of false-front shops, Italianates, and a working theatre that's been seated since 1919. Most of what was built in Sutter Creek a hundred and fifty years ago is still standing.
The town was named for John Sutter — yes, that one — who tried his hand at logging here in 1846 before Marshall's discovery upriver changed his life. The town that took his name became one of the Mother Lode's most productive, then quietly stopped, then quietly endured.
Today, Sutter Creek is the front door of Amador wine country. Fourteen minutes east up the road, the Shenandoah Valley grows some of the oldest Zinfandel vines in California. Many of Sara's buyers come for the wine, stay for the town, and then realize the town is the better story.
